UFS agriculture students gain industry exposure at NAMPO 2026

The University of the Free State (UFS) Agricultural Extension Student Network (AESN) took part in the NAMPO Harvest Day 2026 held in Bothaville in May. The visit was part of a planned learning programme that helps students better understand agriculture by giving them hands-on exposure to how the industry works, including new farming methods, innovation, and the agricultural value chain in the sustainable food systems sector.

The Department of Sustainable Food Systems and Development led this initiative as part of its experiential training mandate. Academic supervision was provided by Prof Johan van Niekerk, supported by lecturers Lwandiso Mdiya, Njabulo Dlamini and Mpumelelo Ntozakhe within the faculty structure and programme delivery.

Participants interacted with agricultural firms including Pannar and AFGRI, engaging in discussions on agronomy, mechanisation, financing models and sustainable production approaches. They also observed advanced machinery, precision agriculture systems, climate-smart practices and modern crop production techniques, showcasing innovation within the sector.

“The NAMPO visit was far more than a routine student excursion. It was designed as an immersive learning opportunity that allows students to connect academic knowledge with real-world agricultural practice,” said Mdiya. These engagements supported classroom learning through real-world exposure.

Further engagement with the African Farmers’ Association of South Africa explored collaboration opportunities, including mentorship, internships and access to professional development resources. The discussions aimed to strengthen links between academia, industry and improve graduate readiness for the sector outcomes focus.

Mdiya said, “These engagements strengthen the relationship between the university and the agricultural industry, ensuring that student training remains relevant, practical, and aligned with sector needs.”
