The Bloemfontein SPCA has addressed a recent incident regarding an animal welfare case involving a Pitbull.
A concerned citizen surrendered the animal, which was in poor condition and showing signs of neglect, into the care of the SPCA, which the Chairman of the Bloemfontein SPCA, Zaandré Campher, says “demonstrated the kind of community responsibility we deeply appreciate.”
Campher added that due to the dog’s condition, the SPCA’s committee decided to retain it, pending a thorough investigation. “This decision was communicated to all relevant staff members, with clear instructions that the animal was not to be released without proper authorisation and inspection procedures,” he added.
A staff member acted against instruction and wrongfully discharged the Pitbull to its owner.
“We take full responsibility for this serious procedural failure,” stated Campher. The staff member responsible has since been suspended, pending an investigation into the incident.
The Bloemfontein SPCA responded by contacting legal authority to obtain a warrant, allowing them to conduct a welfare inspection.
“While we cannot share specific details of our ongoing investigation, we can confirm that animals requiring immediate care are now safely in our custody and receiving appropriate veterinary attention,” added the chairman.
The SPCA has extended their gratitude to the compassionate community member who brought the matter to their attention, as well as the magistrate who authorised their inspection, and the dedicated inspector who responded to the matter, despite being on leave.
“We wish to assure the public that we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness,” says Campher. “Animal welfare is our primary mandate, and we are committed to ensuring our procedures prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.”
He added that the SPCA remains dedicated to the protection of animals in the Bloemfontein community and will continue to work with authorities to ensure justice in this case.
“We ask for the public’s patience as the investigation proceeds and thank our community for their continued support of animal welfare,” he concluded.
